Free plans to avoid private copy tax on Freebox Revolution

Thursday 23 December 2010 | 11:15 CET | News
Free plans to avoid paying the private copy tax on its new Freebox Revolution gateway because it uses network attached storage (NAS) technology rather than a hard drive in the STB and supports all operating systems, Les Echos reports. Under current legislation, storage systems able to operate simultaneously with at least three operating sytems are tax exempt. With the Freebox Revolution's 250 GB of storage capacity, Free would have to pay EUR 35 in tax per unit. If 12 percent of Free's customers, or 500,000 people, buy the new box, Free will have save EUR 17.5 million in taxes. Recorded music
