Deutsche Telekom declined to sell T-Mobile US to France's Free due to "ego" issues, according to free founder Xavier Niel. In an interview with French broadcaster BFM, Niel said the German operator was concerned about selling its largest asset to France's third or fourth operator, given the risk Free could then succeed in the US where Deutsche Telekom did not. Niel added that it was not the price that led to Deutsche Telekom rejecting Free's offer. The German operator was concerned about what it would do with the cash from the sale of T-Mobile, which its shareholders would want as dividends.
