French constitutional authority rejects challenge to law on 1-hour takedown of online terrorist content
France's constitutional authority (Conseil Constitutionnel) has dismissed a challenge by around 60 members of parliaments against new legislation adopted in June requiring hosting providers to take down content inciting terrorism within one hour of notification. This new rule transposes into French law EU regulation approved by the European Parliament in April 2021. Australian eSafety Commissioner to get new takedown powers from 22 January

The Australian government released details of the new powers for the eSafety Commissioner to seek removal of seriously harmful and illegal content, including child sexual exploitation material and terrorist content, no matter where in the world it's hosted. The Online Content Scheme and Abhorrent Violent Conduct Material powers are a core part of the Online Safety Act 2021, which will take effect 23 January 2022 and expand the powers of the eSafety Commissioner to address a wide range of online harms.

EU approves one-hour deadline to take down online terrorism content

The European Parliament has approved an EU regulation requiring hosting providers to take down content inciting terrorism within one hour of notification. The is the final stage in the legislative process, and the regulation will take full effect 12 months after it is published in the EU's official journal. In the mean time, it will be up to the individual EU countries to designate an enforcement body and set penalties for hosting companies that don't adhere to the new rules.
