French govt mulls backing culture with 1% tax on devices

French culture minister Aurelie Filippetti announced on BFMTV that the government would like to set a one-off surcharge on the purchase of connected devices next year. She said it was not like a tax, which paid annually, nor a licence, as is the case for public TV. The Lescure report submitted last month to the minstry recommends setting the charge at around 1 percent of the retail price. By buying a EUR 300 smartphone, consumers will give EUR 3 to cultural funds like the national film centre CNC.
