French operators claim over 1 mln 4G customers
Orange France announced that it reached its goal of over 1 million 4G customers by the end of 2013. Orange said it covers around 50 percent of the population already, with over 5,100 LTE network sites. The company has also extended 4G service to customers of its low-cost brand Sosh from 09 January. Following Orange's statement, Reuters also contacted the other French operators. SFR and Bouygues Telecom said they had also each reached 1 million 4G customers. Free Mobile, which was the last to launch LTE in December, declined to provide figures.

SFR reaches LTE coverage goal for 2013

French operator SFR has announced that it has reached its target of covering over 40 percent of the population with its LTE network, over a year after introducing the service for consumers and businesses. The network was available in over 1,200 towns and cities at the end of 2013, the latest to be added being Amiens, Arles, Besancon, Bordeaux, Le Havre, Mulhouse, Nice, Rennes, Tours and Valence. The operator's dual carrier (DC-HSPA+) and 4G (LTE) networks now cover over 70 percent of the French population.

French authorised LTE sites up 3.8 percent in December

France's national frequencies agency, ANFR, has authorised 12,525 cell sites for LTE services as of 1 January, 3.8 percent more than a month earlier. The number of 800MHz sites has increased by 13.6 percent to 3,683, 1800MHz sites are up 2.1 percent to 6,153 and 2.6GHz sites are up 5.3 percent to 7,711. Sosh adds 4G at no extra cost to 5GB plan

Sosh, the low-cost brand of Orange France, has confirmed the addition of 4G services to its offer. In an interview with Le Figaro, Orange CEO Stephane Richard noted that B&You, the rival brand from Bouygues Telecom, has added 4G to its plans, and Sosh would not be far behind. French operator SFR announced the expansion of its 4G network to new towns. Free adds 4G to entry-level service plan

French mobile operator Free is adding 4G service to its lower-tier, 2 hours a month, service plan, which costs EUR 0 for Free ADSL or fibre subscribers and EUR 2 a month for others. Bouygues adds 4G to existing 3G plans with no price hike

French operator Bouygues Telecom has generalised 4G by including it in all of its uncapped 3G subscriptions with no price increase or need to renew the contract. The company reiterated that it soon will introduce 4G for B&You low-cost service subscribers, as announced on 5 December. Bouygues added that it would not pass the VAT increase effective 1 January 2014 to customers of its main-brand or B&You services.

French broadband and mobile operator Free has added 4G service to its no handset, no commitment plan costing EUR 15.99 a month for Freebox subscribers and 19.99 a month for others. Free, which claims theoretical a peak download speed of 150 Mbps, is one of two operators with 20 MHz dedicated for 4G services in the 2.6 GHz band. It now provides subscribers with 20 GB of fair-use LTE data allowance a month before speeds are slowed.

Free Mobile to halve rivals' LTE prices - founder

French operator Free Mobile's founder, Xavier Niel, gave a preview of the company's pricing tactics for LTE services in a France 2 TV interview.
