French press seeks online tax to support newspapers

France's newspapers have followed the film and music industries in calling for ISPs and other internet stakeholders to shoulder a larger burden of royalty and copyright payments. Les Echos writes daily newspapers' association SPQN is successfully lobbying the country's presidential candidates to set up a payment system to finance online news outlets given their significant constribution to the internet's success. The association wants a redistribution whereby all equipment makers, search engines and ISPs pay a tax similar to France's private copy tax. The money raised would be distributed to
