French supreme court cancels Google fine over right to be forgotten

France's data protection agency Cnil has announced the cancellation of a fine of EUR 100,000 imposed on Google in 2016 for not applying the 'right to be forgotten' across all versions of its search engine, regardless of geography. The decision was made by the country's supreme court (Conseil d'Etat), which took the case when Google appealed against the fine. In turn, the French court had referred the matter to the EU Court of Justice for its interpretation of the geographic implications of EU law in such a case.
