Gazelle develops bike with safe smartphone mode

Thursday 26 January 2017 | 15:15 CET | News
Gazelle announced that it's developing a bicycle with a 'SafeDrivePod', to block certain smartphone functions from working while cycling in order to increase safety. The system communicates with the phone over Bluetooth and GPS, and when the cyclist passes 10 kph, it blocks all the advanced functions on the phone. If the user tries to override the system, the pod can send an alert, for example to the parents of a child. The news comes as the Dutch government has said it's considering legislation to limit the use of smartphones while cycling.
