German broadcaster ARD suggests joint effort to rival US media giants

Wednesday 16 May 2018 | 17:43 CET | News

German state broadcaster ARD has suggested setting up an online "super media library" that would combine content from Germany’s state broadcasters as well as from other publishers and private broadcasters as a way to counteract the dominance of platforms like YouTube and Facebook in Germany and Europe, reported Deutschlandfunk.

While a joint online platform would have to overcome "high hurdles" to be technically feasible and legally approved, it could ultimately serve as a counterweight to US-based platforms and enable broadcasters and publishers to retain control over their data and set rules of play, wrote Deutschlandfunk. It’s also unclear how publishers and outlets would earn money with the platform, they added.

Still, ARD’s proposal for a joint-online platform has already found resonance among CEOs in Germany, wrote Focus Magazine. ProSiebenSat.1 CEO Conrad Albert said he welcomed the idea and that there was a need for "German and European alternatives" to services like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Facebook, while RTL said it was "essentially open" to cooperations that fit its business model. Mathias Doepfner, the CEO of Axel Springer, likewise said he was open to the idea of setting up a joint platform, wrote Deutschlandfunk.
