German coalition forms to oppose hate-speech takedown law

A broad coalition of German industry groups has come out against the government's proposed legislation requiring faster take-down times and higher fines for hate speech online. The groups said the legislation, if passed by parliament, would have "catastrophic consequences", leading to site owners taking down possibly legal content for fear of the fines and impinging on freedom of speech. Accusing the government of giving into election campaign considerations, the statement said it supports stepping up the fight against hate speech but not at the cost of fundamental freedoms.
