German digital minister to pressure social media platforms over news feeds

Baer said she intends to hold "open talks" with Facebook and Google about their methods for sequencing posts on their respective social media platforms. Because algorithms sort posts according to relevance or popularity, they can push to the top of feeds older posts that often have "little to do with the truth," said Baer. The incoming minister said she wants to see "real-time timelines" that confront users with "what they need to know" rather then posts targeted to user preferences.
