German govt launches Gigabit Germany campaign

Thursday 9 March 2017 | 17:14 CET | News
German federal minister for transport Alexander Dobrindt has announced a EUR 100 billion investment into a gigabit broadband network in Germany by 2025. The decision, made after consultation with Net Alliance Digital Germany, is designed to enable technologies like virtual reality and IoT, which require higher data rates. Dobrindt said Germany needed "more bandwidth, reliable real-time transmission and intelligent networks." He said the networks would bring together fibre and 5G mobile communications technology. The ministry currently supplies around EUR 4 billion for broadband expansion.
