German Greens propose EUR 25 deposit on smartphones, tablets, as incentive to recycle

The German Green Party has proposed a deposit of EUR 25 on new smartphones and tablets. This would be an incentive for people to return old devices, the environmental policy spokeswoman for the Greens Bettina Hoffmann said, according to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. The party has commissioned the Wuppertal Institute, which specialises in environmental issues, to examine which products should be subject to a deposit. The institute, however, has not given suggestions on a possible deposit amount, Manager Magazine reports.

The institute has identified numerous products that could be subject to a deposit, including household batteries and small electrical appliances, as well as tires, paint cans and containers with pesticides.
