German justice minister wants law requiring messenger interoperability

German lawmakers are looking into new legislation that would require messaging services like WhatsApp to enable their users to communicate with users of rival services, reported Heise Online. Germany's Minister of Justice Katarina Barley said the "magic word" was interoperability and that a new law at the European level requiring companies to open themselves up and disclose their interfaces to comparable providers was needed, to ensure users from different services can communicate with another.
