German public broadcasters secure sub-licence for Olympics coverage

Friday 11 August 2017 | 12:02 CET | News

German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF have regained rights to show the Olympics under a sub-licence with Discovery Communications and its unit Eurosport.

Eurosport holds the rights to broadcast the next four Olympic Games, both summer and winter, from 2018 until 2024. Talks last year on a sub-licence with the public broadcasters failed, but the companies have now managed to strike a deal. As a result, ARD and ZDF will provide free-to-air coverage for the next four Olympics, alongside Eurosport's own broadcasts and special channel for the Olympics. Eurosport retains the rights to online and mobile coverage of the games.

For the PyeongChang winter games next year, Eurosport will retain exclusivity for German prime time highlights programming on Eurosport 1. Snowboard, Short Track, Figure Skating and Ice Hockey (excluding German team matches and finals) will also be live and exclusive on Eurosport.

Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.
