German regulator deactivates 0800 numbers in pop-up scam

Monday 18 June 2018 | 14:11 CET | News
Germany's national telecoms regulator, the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA), has ordered the deactivation of four 0800 numbers that consumers were referred to in misleading pop-up error messages. The pop-up messages appeared on consumers' computers and told them their device had a computer or software problem. The messages further said consumers could receive free assistance from a number shown in the pop-up window, but the numbers were used to connect consumers to third-parties who tried to gain access to PCs to obtain data or demanded money for virus-protection programmes, said the BNetzA.
