German regulator pulls GPS devices with microphones from shelves

Thursday 5 April 2018 | 15:57 CET | News
Germany's Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) announced it is cracking down on the sale of location-tracing devices containing GPS or GSM trackers. Because GPS-tracking devices containing microphones can eavesdrop on users without their knowledge, they are "unauthorised transmitters" under German law, said Jochen Homann, the president of the Federal Network Agency. As a result, the BNetzA said it was withdrawing these devices from circulation to protect the privacy of the wearers of these devices and their surroundings.
