German regulator says Huawei can build 5G network if meets security requirements

Jochen Homann, the president of the German Federal Network Agency, said that Huawei can take part in building a 5G network if it meets the security requirements drafted by the regulator, the Financial Times reports.

Operators have to “take special care when selecting system suppliers” and security-related components may only be used if they have undergone IT security checks by an approved testing body and have been certified by the Federal Office for Information Security, the BSI, he added.

The Federal Network Agency does not have evidence that Huawei poses a security risk to the network infrastructure, the report added. Network operators in Germany already work with Huawei technology in their systems, Homann noted, while Huawei holds a large number of patents in this area.

An exclusion of Huawei would delay the roll-out of the digital networks, he said. The US government has recently dropped the request made to the German government to ban Huawei from the pool of firms building the 5G network. In March, the US ambassador in Germany Richard Grenell threatened Germany to reduce the sharing of intelligence information in the case Huawei would be among the firms equipping the 5G network.
