Germany, France sign common paper to support European cloud infrastructure Gaia-X
The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) said that it has signed a common paper with the French government that outlines the position on the European Cloud Gaia-X. According to the paper, Gaia-X is a project that has the support of the representatives of industries, cloud services providers and cloud services customers in France and in Germany, and their respective governments.

Gaia-X aims to build common European data and AI ecosystems to guarantee data sovereignty. “Data sovereignty by design” will be the guiding principle to develop software for platforms and services, according to the paper. The ecosystems will initially focus on a number of sectors including mobility, finance, health, environment, climate and agriculture, public services, and Industry 4.0.

In parallel, the parties agreed to create business models for data sharing and to provide non-discriminatory access to the ecosystems. Gaia-X should also support existing best practices, especially in the field of service interoperability and data interoperability, with the participation of the European R&D community. The common paper is the result of a process started by the German and French Economic Ministers, Peter Altmaier and Bruno Le Maire in October.
