Breko, Germany’s federal broadband association, has released the sixth edition of its annual broadband report, now renamed the Fibre-optic Compass, presenting the various fibre-optic expansion projects of over 170 network operators and other technical information about fibre-optic network roll-outs in Germany. The report also contains contributions from high-ranking German and EU politicians on the subject.

The report found that more than 82 percent of the fibre-optic roll-out (FTTB/FTTH) in Germany is being undertaken by alternative network operators. Breko expects that roughly 5 million households and businesses will have access to high-speed fibre-optic connections thanks to Breko network operators by 2020, up from 1.5 million FTTB- and FTTH-connections with Breko carriers today. The report estimates that nearly 28 million households in Germany will be connected to a fibre-optic network by 2025.
