Google acquires Dublin online retail marketing company Pointy

Wednesday 15 January 2020 | 12:51 CET | News

Dublin-based internet marketing start-up Pointy has signed an agreement to be acquired by Google. The deal is expected to close in the coming weeks, subject to the customary closing conditions.

In a statement, Pointy said that it had developed a close relationship with Google over the last few years and that they shared a vision of how technology can help improve local retail businesses. The company did not disclose financial terms of the deal. However, an unnamed source told TechCrunch that the deal was worth EUR 147 million (USD 163 million).

Pointy has developed technology to help brick-and-mortar retailers without an existing e-commerce presence to market their products online. Customers can connect a Pointy hardware box to their barcode scanner, or download the free app if they use PoS systems from suppliers such as Lightspeed, Square, Clover or Vend. Their products will appear on their Pointy page automatically, with no data entry required.
