The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance of carmakers will be using Google’s Android operating system to power the dashboard media display in its future cars, worldwide. The alliance, which last year sold a total of 10.6 million vehicles worldwide, has picked Google’s OS for its next-generation infotainment, set to debut in 2021. This means the dashboard will better integrate Google’s maps, app store and voice-activated assistant.
The alliance said the new partnership comes under its 2022 mid-term plan to equip more vehicles with connectivity and cloud-based services. Under that plan, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi is targeting increased sales of more than 14 million units a year by the end of 2022. The alliance also wants to launch 12 new zero-emission electric vehicles, new autonomous-driving technologies and continue rolling out its Alliance Intelligent Cloud. This cloud system will provide a platform to integrate data management and infotainment systems and to facilitate over-the-air upgrades and remote diagnostics in vehicles.
