Google Fi 'shows roaming costs have no future' - Oettinger

Google's decision to launch its own mobile service, dubbed Project Fi, in the US will also have "repercussions" on the EU market, according to digital economy commissioner Gunther Oettinger. In an initial tweeted response to Google's confirmation of its plans, Oettinger added that Google's Project Fi "shows that roaming costs have no future" and that "it should also be a clear signal for the Council to abolish roaming charges". The European Parliament has called for roaming surcharges to be abolished by the end of 2015 but has yet to negotiate an agreement with the EU Council.
