Google Fiber to leave Louisville after unsuccessful deployment

Google has announced it will be turning off its Google Fiber service in Louisville from 15 April, after going live there in October 2017. Google said that the shallow trench method it used in the city has not been successful and that it would need to rebuild the entire network to provide its service, something it does not want to do. Google will give the last two months of service free to customers, as a sort of compensation.

The company added that the decision to leave Louisville will have no impact on other Fiber cities and the company said it has refined its micro trenching methods and seen good outcomes elsewhere.

The decision is a defeat for Louisville, which courted Google Fiber with new utility pole ordinances and then fought consequent lawsuits with other providers, the Verge reported, quoting a local reporter. It also then permitted Google to cut seams in the streets.
