Google introduced Android for Work, adapting its mobile operating system for business users. Working with Android device makers and providers of business applications, the company will introduce the new features to attract more business users to the Android platform.
Android for Work includes four elements. Work profiles builds on the default encryption, enhanced SELinux security enforcement and multi-user support in Android 5.0 to create a dedicated work profile that isolates and protects work data. IT departments will be able to deploy approved work apps on Android devices, alongside their users' personal apps, and keep sensitive corporate data secure. The Android for Work app is available for devices running Ice Cream Sandwich through Kitkat, or that don’t run work profiles natively. The app delivers secure mail, calendar, contacts, documents, browsing and access to approved work apps and can be completely managed by IT administrators.
Google Play for Work is a simplified app delivery system for businesses to roll out their own apps to employee devices. It works with all users running Android for Work. Finally, Google added a range of business productivity apps, including email, contacts and calendar, support for Exchange and Notes and document editing capabilities for documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
The larger Android device makers, including Samsung, LG, Dell and HP, will support the new software, as well as device management platforms such as BlackBerry, SAP, Citrix, Adobe, Box and Cisco.
