Google to expand data centre in Groningen
Google plans to build a major data centre in Eemshaven, in the northern Dutch city of Groningen. The project is estimated to cost EUR 600 million. The 70-hectare site is expected to start operations in early 2016. According to Groningen Seaports, operator of the Eemshaven harbour, the data centre is expected to generate employment in the area, including around 150 permanent jobs. Google already operates a smaller data centre in Eemshaven.

Property tycoon faces bribery charge over Google data centre

The Dutch public prosecutor is pursuing a former real estate tycoon for allegedly paying bribes to get Google to build a data centre in Eemshaven, in the north of the Netherlands. The bribe was reportedly worth EUR 1.7 million, according to the paper Het Financieele Dagblad. The property magnate, a director at TCN Group, allegedly paid the money to an agent working for Google. Google supports coding lessons at Groningen schools

Google has started to work with the Pedagogical Academy of the Hanzehogeschool Groningen and the organisation Groningen Programmeert in order to support coding lessons at Dutch schools. Twenty primary schools in Groningen province in the northeast of the Netherlands will benefit from the lessons, as well as two regional training schools. Google is active in Eemshaven in the north of Netherlands, where it is investing EUR 600 million in a new data centre.

Volgens Groningen Seaports zal de komst van het datacenter tot extra werkgelegenheid leiden in de regio. Het nieuwe datacenter biedt plek aan 150 permanente arbeidsplaatsen. Google beschikt overigens al over een kleiner datacenter in Eemshaven.

Apple plans data centre in north Netherlands

Apple plans to build a data centre in the Dutch town of Eemshaven, reports Dagblad van het Noorden. Google already operates a data centre in the northern town since 2008. The site offers access to a trans-Atlantic cable and a local energy supply, while also being above sea level, protecting it from eventual flooding in the country.

Eemshaven gets 2nd data centre

A second data centre will come to Eemshaven in the province of Groningen, RTV Noord reported. The municipality of Eemsmond has received an accelerated approval from the province to expand the business park by 40 hectares. Google already has a large data centre in Eemshaven. The location is attractive because there is a power plant which that can instantly deliver its goods without transportation. A trans-Atlantic fibre cable also has its landing spot there.
