Google announced plans to invest EUR 1 billion in Germany in digital infrastructure and clean energy by 2030. This includes the sum to build a new cloud centre in Hanau, which is part of the Frankfurt Cloud Region, and a further cloud region in Berlin-Brandenburg.
The building in Hanau is located 20 km far from the DE-CIX Internet hub in Frankfurt. It will be fully operational in 2022. Google expands therefore the existing Frankfurt Google Cloud region to serve the growing demand for Google Cloud services in Germany. The building in Hanau was built sustainably with a focus on energy-efficient infrastructure.
Google will also open a further cloud region in Berlin-Brandenburg. The Berlin-Brandenburg region was designed specifically to provide corporate services and products for Google Cloud customers of all sizes and from all industries in Germany. It will be integrated into the existing network of digital nodes, which now consists of 27 Google Cloud regions around the world.
Finally, Google announced that its local energy partner Engie Germany will feed more than 140 MW of solar and wind energy into the German grid in the coming years. This includes the maintenance of 22 wind farms in the five federal states of Brandenburg, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein. Engie will ensure that from 2022 around 80 percent of the energy supplied to Google’s infrastructure will come from CO2-free sources.
