Google to shut down smart messaging app Allo

Thursday 6 December 2018 | 09:07 CET | News

Google announced it's discontinuing its messaging app Allo. First launched in 2016, the app introduced artificial intelligence features to messaging, such as 'smart reply', as well as an 'incognito' mode for increased privacy. Google said its Messages app has proven more popular and it will focus on that instead going forward.

Google already halted development of Allo earlier this year, and popular Allo features such as smart reply have been integrated into Messages. The company will stop support for the app at the end of March 2019.

Google has been using Messages to develop more functions such as RCS with operators. Around 175 million people use the Messages app on Android devices, Google said. The company will also continue to offer its Duo app for video calling and Hangouts for instant messaging.
