Google wins key search results decision

A French court has overturned an earlier decision which found Google directly responsible for the results generated by the Google Suggest system. The new ruling states that even though Google can intervene, by blocking obscene words, for example, the system is fundamentally automatic and the company cannot be said to be trying to affect a third party with wilful intent. The case involves a business in Lyon that sued the internet giant for defamation in 2011 because the search engine suggested the word 'crook' ('escroc') in third position after entering the company's name.
