Government urges SoftBank, KDDI to remove SIM lock restrictions - report

Thursday 19 September 2019 | 08:25 CET | News
The Japanese government will require domestic mobile operators KDDI and SoftBank to ensure that subscribers to their new plans will have their handsets unlocked for usage on any network immediately, The Japan Times reports, citing unnamed sources close to the matter. KDDI and SoftBank have recently introduced tariff plans that include a 50 percent discount on handset purchases provided the users does not want a SIM unlock for 100 days. The Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications believes that this restriction would effectively lock in subscribers, the sources said.
