Greece puts aside 5G spectrum, auction revenues for industrial research

Greece adopted a new Law on Digital Governance and Electronic Communications that paves the way for the rapid development of new research and investment programmes around 5G, according to local publication In.gr. The telecom authority EETT reserved 5G spectrum at 733-736 MHz and 788-791 MHz, 3400-3410 MHz, as well as 200 MHz from the higher 26 GHz band for universities and start-ups to research and develop 5G-based services and applications.

A quarter of the proceeds from the 5G auction will be available for 5G projects in the new ‘research’ bands. The spectrum is offered free of charge for 12 months, for experimentation purposes. The funds will be awarded for digital innovation in the transport and logistics, manufacturing, defense, utilities, health, and tourism sectors.

The state reserved the 3,400-3,410 MHz radio frequency band for ten years for the purpose of its exclusive use for R&D and innovation purposes in networks, products and services operating on 5G infrastructure or related services. For the same purpose, the state may reserve 200 MHz from the 26 GHz frequency band, which may remain unavailable after the completion of the relevant licensing process. In addition, it can use part of the 733-736 MHz and 788-791 MHz frequency bands, which have been allocated for other use.

Investments will be provided through the new Phaistos (Faistos) Fund, which will be administered by Holdings 5G.
