GSMA backs NFC interoperability

The GSMA has underlined the growing commitment of the mobile industry to launch NFC services. Many of the world's leading operators, including America Movil, Axiata, Bharti Airtel, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, KT, MTS, Orange, Qtel, Softbank Mobile, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Telekom Austria, Telenor and Vodafone, have voiced their commitment to implementing NFC, and intend to launch commercial NFC services in select markets by 2012, the industry group said in a statement. In addition to mobile payments, NFC is expected to facilitate applications such as mobile ticketing, mobile couponing, the exchange of information and content, and controlled access to cars, homes, hotels, offices and car parks. According to Frost & Sullivan, the total payment value for NFC globally will reach more than EUR 110 billion in 2015. To support this, the GSMA said it will develop the necessary certification and testing standards to ensure global interoperability of NFC services.
