Half Netflix subscribers share account
More than four in ten Dutch subscribers to streaming services share their account with others. This includes half of all Netflix subscribers, and almost 60 percent of teens using streaming services, according to research from the Telecompaper Consumer Panel in August.

Young people are in general more likely to share their subscriptions with others. Almost half of 12-29 year-olds said they don’t share their subscriptions to HBO Go, Sport1 Go, Film1 Go, Netflix, Videoland Unlimited, NLziet, Spotify and Deezer, compared to 81 percent of 50-64 year-olds. Overall, 42 percent of streaming subscribers said they share their accounts with people outside their household.

Netflix is the biggest video streaming services in the Netherlands with around 1.1 million subscribers in the second quarter, according to the Telecompaper rapport: ‘Video Behaviour of Dutch Consumers 2015 Q2’. This includes paid subscribers as well as those on the one-month free trial. However many more people may be using the service without paying anything, due to account sharing with friends or family. Most streaming services can be used by more than one person at a time, including by people not members of the household. For example, Netflix offers three types of subscription, allowing one, two or four accounts to be used at simultaneously. Out of all the streaming services in the survey, Netflix was the most commonly shared outside the home, with neighbours, family members and friends. Half of all Netflix subscriptions said they share their log-in details with others.

Almost a fifth (18%) of subscribers to HBO Go in the survey said they share their subscription. HBO Go is offered to subscribers of the HBO TV channel to watch programmes on-demand on mobile devices and the internet. The music service Spotify is shared much less, by only 8 percent of users.
