Hondutel gets no bids for Ehmovitel stake

Honduras state-owned operator Hondutel received no bids for a 49 percent stake in its recently created mobile subsidiary Empresa Hondurena de Telefonia Movil (Movitelh/ Emhovitel), local newspaper Tiempo reports, citing Heidy Mendoza, the director of operations of the Honduras treasury department. The bid opening was scheduled for 25 January, but attracted no bidders.

Back in December, Mendoza said that ten companies requested tender documents to buy the 49 percent stake in Ehmovitel. Only three interested parties acquired the tender documents, namely Ilcol (Italy), Amroc (Jordan), and LR Group (Israel). Ehmovitel comprises all mobile telephony units set up by Hondutel between 2006 and 2009, including Tegucel, Sulacel, Olanchocel, Copancel, Cholucel and Ceibacel.

America Movil's unit Claro, and Tigo, part of the Millicom group, have won the 4G spectrum tender launched by Honduras' National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel) in August. Honduras govt to sell 51% stake in Hondutel

The Honduran government plans to sell a 51 percent stake in state-owned operator Hondutel, local newspaper El Heraldo reports. The government hopes to find a strategic partner to acquire its Hondutel stake over the next 120 days. The government plans to establish a joint venture with a private investor, who would own 51 percent of Hondutel, while the government will retain a 22.5 percent stake, while the remaining 22.5 percent of the shares will be distributed among employees.

Govt approves Hondutel rescue plan

The Honduran Congress has approved a rescue plan for state-owned operator Hondutel. The operator has been authorized to start negotiations with private banks to receive financing of up to HML 106 million (approximately USD 5.2 million) to cover the salaries of its employees, local newspaper La Prensa reports. Also under this rescue plan, over the next 45 days, Hondutel will have to sell or rent some assets – including land and buildings – that it is not currently using.

Romeo Vasquez Velasquez, CEO of state-owned operator Hondutel, will step down from his position, effective 20 January, radio HRN reports. Vasquez intends to run for president of Honduras in this year's elections, for the Alianza Patriotica Hondurena party.

Hondutel extends Movitelh tender until 25 January

The government of Honduras has prolonged the tender for a 49 percent in state-owned operator Hondutel. The bid opening was initially scheduled for 2 January 2013, and has now been extended to 25 January, Romeo Vasquez, Hondutel CEO, told local newspaper El Heraldo. According to Vasquez, 13 operators have already bought the tender documents.

Ten companies requested tender documents to buy a 49 percent stake in Ehmovitel, a new holding company for Hondutel's mobile subsidiaries, said Heidy Mendoza, the director of operations of the Honduras treasury department. La Tribuna had reported that the government was looking for 15 bidders. Hondutel's has around 100,000 mobile subscribers, mainly in Tegucipalga and San Pedro Sula. Honduras state-owned operator Hondutel has launched a tender for a minority stake in its recently created mobile subsidiary Empresa Hondurena de Telefonia Movil (Ehmovitel – Movitelh). Interested companies can acquire the tender documents by 18 December for HNL 10,000 (approximately USD 500). The bid opening is scheduled for 2 January 2013.
