Ten firms look at 49% Hondutel mobile stake
Ten companies requested tender documents to buy a 49 percent stake in Ehmovitel, a new holding company for Hondutel's mobile subsidiaries, said Heidy Mendoza, the director of operations of the Honduras treasury department. La Tribuna had reported that the government was looking for 15 bidders. Hondutel's has around 100,000 mobile subscribers, mainly in Tegucipalga and San Pedro Sula. Its mobile subsidiaries are Tegucel, Sulacel, Cholucel and Ceibacel. The bids will be opened by the treasury on 2 January. The highest bidder will be asked to provide a USD 5 million guarantee.  

El Heraldo reports that the Honduran telecom industry invested USD 225 million in 2012. Operator data showed that mobile service providers invested USD 175 million to USD 190 million of the total figure, mainly on network expansion. Telecoms have been the biggest source of inward investment in the last 10 years.

Govt approves Hondutel rescue plan

The Honduran Congress has approved a rescue plan for state-owned operator Hondutel. The operator has been authorized to start negotiations with private banks to receive financing of up to HML 106 million (approximately USD 5.2 million) to cover the salaries of its employees, local newspaper La Prensa reports. Also under this rescue plan, over the next 45 days, Hondutel will have to sell or rent some assets – including land and buildings – that it is not currently using.

The bid opening was scheduled for 25 January, but attracted no bidders.

Hondutel seeks investor, starts tender

Honduras state-owned operator Hondutel has launched a tender for a minority stake in its recently created mobile subsidiary Empresa Hondurena de Telefonia Movil (Ehmovitel – Movitelh). Interested companies can acquire the tender documents by 18 December for HNL 10,000 (approximately USD 500). The bid opening is scheduled for 2 January 2013.

Hondutel to set up mobile subsidiary

The Honduras government plans to set up a mobile subsidiary of Honduras state-owned operator Hondutel, El Financiero reports, citing Hondutel manager Romero Vasquez. The mobile unit would provide mobile telephony and internet services. The government plans to offer a 49 percent stake in this mobile unit to a strategic investor. The Commission for the Public – Private Alliance (CoAlianza) is in charge of selecting the investor.

Honduras state-owned operator Hondutel is studying a partnership proposal from Uruguayan state-owned operator Antel, El Heraldo reports, citing Orlando Mejia, president of the Union of Telecommunications Workers of Honduras (Sitratelh).
