Ten companies requested tender documents to buy a 49 percent stake in Ehmovitel, a new holding company for Hondutel's mobile subsidiaries, said Heidy Mendoza, the director of operations of the Honduras treasury department. La Tribuna had reported that the government was looking for 15 bidders. Hondutel's has around 100,000 mobile subscribers, mainly in Tegucipalga and San Pedro Sula. Its mobile subsidiaries are Tegucel, Sulacel, Cholucel and Ceibacel. The bids will be opened by the treasury on 2 January. The highest bidder will be asked to provide a USD 5 million guarantee.
El Heraldo reports that the Honduran telecom industry invested USD 225 million in 2012. Operator data showed that mobile service providers invested USD 175 million to USD 190 million of the total figure, mainly on network expansion. Telecoms have been the biggest source of inward investment in the last 10 years.
