Hondutel seeks investors
Honduras telecom carrier Empresa Hondurena de Telecomunicaciones (Hondutel) has launched an investor search. Hondutel "is looking for new partners to provide capital and equipment to improve the mobile and Oye services provision", David Barahona, Hondutel's corporate strategy and regulatory affairs manager told La Tribuna. The Honduras operator thus hopes to attract new mobile and broadband internet customers, Barahona added. According to Barahona, Hondutel needs funding ranging between USD 200 and USD 300 million to develop and install internet connections in 27 cities across the country.

Govt approves Hondutel rescue plan

The Honduran Congress has approved a rescue plan for state-owned operator Hondutel. The operator has been authorized to start negotiations with private banks to receive financing of up to HML 106 million (approximately USD 5.2 million) to cover the salaries of its employees, local newspaper La Prensa reports. Also under this rescue plan, over the next 45 days, Hondutel will have to sell or rent some assets – including land and buildings – that it is not currently using.

Hondutel to set up mobile subsidiary

The Honduras government plans to set up a mobile subsidiary of Honduras state-owned operator Hondutel, El Financiero reports, citing Hondutel manager Romero Vasquez. The mobile unit would provide mobile telephony and internet services. The government plans to offer a 49 percent stake in this mobile unit to a strategic investor. The Commission for the Public – Private Alliance (CoAlianza) is in charge of selecting the investor.

Hondutel adds only 100,000 mobile subs in four years

Honduras state-owned operator Hondutel has reached only 100,000 mobile telephony subscribers four years since it launched mobile services on the local market, local newspaper El Heraldo reports, citing company CEO Romeo Vasquez Velasquez. Hondutel officially launched mobile telephony services on 16 July 2007. According to the Hondutel executive, the operator targets one million mobile voice customers. Hondutel receives offers from US investors

Honduras state-owned operator Hondutel has received investment offers form US companies, Orlando Mejia Tercero, president of Hondutel's workers union, told local newspaper La Prensa. Hondutel asks legislators to not cut next year's budget

Honduras's state-owned operator, Hondutel, has asked a parliamentary committee evaluating the country's 2011 budget to maintain the operator's budget at USD 163.5 million next year, reports La Tribuna.
