HTC 10 smartphone to launch in early May

HTC has unveiled its new flagship smartphone, the HTC 10. The company has simplified its branding, dropping the 'One' and 'M' names for its latest top-of-the-range device.

The HTC 10 comes with a metal casing with curved edges and glass front with 5.2-inch screen of S-LCD and QHD resolution (1440 x 2560 pixels). A small button centred below the screen works as fingerprint sensor and 'home' touch.

The Android 6.0 device will come two different Qualcomm processors, depending on the country. In the US, this will be the Snapdragon 820. It also runs a 3,000 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0, 4 GB RAM and a choice of 32 or 64 GB internal storage and comes with a slot for microSD cards up to 2 TB.

The new Boost+ feature helps save on power consumption and optimise memory usage, while the PowerBotics system detects and shuts down apps using excessive power. HTC said it also worked with Google to streamline the number of apps pre-loaded on the phone, and its new Freestyle interface gives users more control over how apps are displayed.

The 12-megapixel back camera offers a f/1.8 lens, optical image stabilisation, laser autofocus and similar functions to a digital SLR, plus support for 4K video with 24-bit high-resolution stereo sound. The front features a 5 megapixel camera, also with f/1.8 lens and OIS.

In terms of connectivity, the HTC 10 comes with a USB 3.0 Type-C connection, 802.11 ac Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth 4.2 and extensive 4G band support for use worldwide.

The phone will be available in a choice of grey, silver or gold for a recommended retail price of EUR 749 from early May. Pre-orders start 12 April.

In the US, HTC said the 10 will be available across multiple providers, including Verizon Wireless, Sprint and T-Mobile, which will announce colors, availability and pricing. In addition, HTC will be offering an Unlocked edition on www.HTC.com, which will be compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile networks and costs USD 699. The unlocked edition also comes with UH OH Protection, which includes one replacement at no charge within the first 12 months of ownership for a cracked screen or water damage.
