HTC considers possible sale, spin-off of VR business - report

HTC is exploring strategic options that could range from separating its virtual-reality business to a full sale of the company, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.

The Taiwan-based smartphone maker is working with an adviser as it considers bringing in a strategic investor, selling the Vive VR business or spinning off the unit, the report said, adding that HTC has held talks with companies including Google on potential deals. 

A full sale of HTC is considered less likely, as it isn’t an obvious fit for a single acquirer, one of the sources said. 

HTC shares rose almost 5 percent after the report, giving the company a market value of USD 1.9 billion. The company declined to comment.

Smartphone maker HTC reported a sharp deterioration in sales in August, with revenues down 54 percent year-on-year to TWD 3.00 billion. That compares to an annual fall of just 2 percent in July, to TWD 6.19 billion, and growth of over 8 percent in June to TWD 6.89 billion.

HTC narrowed its losses in the second quarter thanks to a continued reduction in costs. The net loss reduced to TWD 2.0 billion from TWD 3.1 billion a year ago, and the operating loss narrowed to TWD 2.2 billion from TWD 4.2 billion.

HTC reported revenues for the second quarter of TWD 16.136 billion, down 14.5 percent from the year earlier period. After double-digit declines in April and May, the smartphone maker returned to annual sales growth in June, with an 8.4 percent increase to TWD 6.891 billion. The company launched its new flagship phone, the U11 in June. The company will report full quarterly results at a later date.
