Huawei prepares back-up OS in case US blocks Android

Friday 15 March 2019 | 14:17 CET | News

Huawei has built its own operating systems (OS) for both smartphones and computers for use in the event current systems provided by Google and Microsoft are suddenly blocked, reports the South China Morning Post. The Chinese giant uses the Google’s Android OS for its smartphones and Microsoft’s Windows for its laptops and tablets but has developed a proprietary OS in case it’s blocked from employing the US-made software following recent tensions with the US government. “We have prepared our own operating system, if it turns out we can no longer use these systems [Android], we will be ready and have our plan B,” Huawei’s mobile chief Richard Yu Chengdong told German publication Die Welt. Yu’s comments confirm an earlier report by the South China Morning Post revealing the existence of a years-long project to build an alternative to Android.

A previous US ban on Chinese telecommunications equipment maker ZTE from using American products and services served as a reality check, prompting Huawei to develop its own OS, said the report. A Huawei spokesperson subsequently confirmed that the backup systems were only for use in “extenuating circumstances” and that “Android and Windows will always remain our first choices.”
