Huawei scraps new laptop launch due to US ban

Wednesday 12 June 2019 | 09:36 CET | News

Huawei has scrapped the launch of a new laptop due to the ban on doing business with American suppliers, said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s consumer division. He told CNBC that the firm had formally planned to launch a new product in its Matebook series, but it had been indefinitely put on hold.

He said that being on the US Entity List, which restricts American companies from selling products to Huawei, had caused the cancellation. The news was first reported by The Information, which said Huawei was expected to launch the computer at CES Asia in Shanghai this week. Yu called the situation "unfortunate".

When asked if the laptop could be launched at a later date, Yu said it "depends on how long the Entity List will be there".

The Digitimes reported earlier that Huawei had asked its laptop supply chain partners to suspend deliveries.
