Hulu to introduce live TV in H1

Hulu is getting ready to launch a live TV service on top of its existing offer that includes a catalogue of on-demand TV shows from major networks, writes Cnet. The live TV service will be accessible without signing a contract, but will have ads. It will become available in the first half, with the version allowing two simultaneous live streams priced at less than USD 40 per month. CEO Mike Hopkins said the cost will include access to the usual USD 8 on-demand subscription as well. Hopkins also confirmed that the service would include cloud DVR and the ability to record, set to be a large factor, according to various reports.

The new service will include Hulu's entire existing on-demand catalogue with live TV channels as well as live channels from Time-Warner, ABC/Disney, CBS and Fox, plus some cable channels. Hulu is also in talks with NBC and Comcast to bring their channels to its live TV platform. Hulu said it will even offer local broadcast feeds in some cities through the new service.

According to Mashable, there will be a personalised landing page. Users will have to answer a series of questions about their entertainment preferences before they can move to the launch screen. The Lineup will vary depending on the user, but will feature a combination of live, on-demand and recorded content.

The new Hulu live service will also feature notifications. According to Mashable, the alerts will for the moment be reserved for sports but Hulu intends to apply the technology for breaking news as well as providing a heads-up when a show or series is about to be taken off the service.
