ICANN assigns .amazon domain name to retailer following rainforest battle

The global Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced that it's designating the .amazon internet domain to the e-commerce giant following a 7-year battle with an alliance of South American countries. Amazon first applied for ".amazon" and two internationalised versions of the name back in 2012, prompting opposition from Amazon basin countries Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana and Suriname on the grounds that it refers to their geographic region and should not be monopolised by one company.
