Idea Cellular quarterly net loss widens, revenue down nearly 20%

Indian mobile operator Idea Cellular posted revenues of INR 74.65 billion for the quarter ended 30 September 2017, which represents a decline of 19.7 percent year-on-year. EBITDA reached INR 15 billion, down 47.1 percent year-on-year, with EBITDA margin at 20.1 percent in the September quarter. Idea Cellular’s net loss widened 90.6 percent year-on-year to INR 11.7 billion in the quarter ended 30 September.

Idea’s total mobile data user base was flat at 38.2 million, while the number of broadband (3G+4G) subscribers increased by 3.2 million to 29.6 million at the end of September 2017.

Idea also reports that, in the past two years, it has expanded its mobile broadband infrastructure and added 93,818 broadband (3G+4G) sites. Idea has multiplied its broadband sites by 3.4 times in last two years and the overall broadband sites now stands at 133,685. Idea’s wireless broadband network (3G+4G) currently covers 568 million Indian customers (46.9 percent of the Indian population) across 22 service areas spread over 121,446 towns and villages.

Idea has also increased its fibre backbone network by more than 50,000 km (100,400 km in the second quarter of FY16 to 150,500 km in the second quarter of FY18). The capex spend for the quarter was INR 19.7 billion.
