Iflix expands SVoD service to 8 MENA countries

Subscription video on demand (SVoD) platform Iflix has expanded its service in 8 countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Customers in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Lebanon, Egypt and Sudan can now sign up for a 30-day free trial, The Nation reports. Customers will unlimited access to thousands of TV shows, movies and more on any device, with no credit card required.

With its MENA launch, Iflix says it now has a total global headcount of 700 staff across 24 offices worldwide. Iflix has also established a new regional headquarters for MENA in Dubai. For new subscribers, Iflix offers a complimentary 1-month trial with full access to its service, features and content. Customers can visit the iflix website, or download the app from Google Play or Apple App Store to register.

SVoD service provider Iflix has completed a USD 133 million funding round. Proceeds from this funding round will be used to support iflix's local content strategy. The funding round was led by Hearst and also included new investors Singapore-based EDBI and clients of DBS private bank. Existing shareholders Evolution Media, Sky, Catcha Group, Liberty Global, Jungle Ventures and PLDT also increased their investments. The new round brings total funding raised by Iflix this calendar year to USD 220 million.

Iflix partners Econet Media for African launch

VoD service Iflix and Econet Media's African media company Kwese announced a partnership to bring streaming entertainment services to sub-Saharan Africa. Started in Asia and recently expanded to the Middle East, Iflix announced last month plans to bring its services to Africa. It will leverage Kwese's experience in the video market to support the launch of its streaming service in Zimbabwe and across Africa.

Iflix inks content deal with BBC

Internet TV platform Iflix has signed an agreement with BBC Worldwide to offer programmes from the UK public broadcaster. The deal, the first between the commercial arm of the BBC and the emerging markets streaming service, covers 150 hours of UK programming. As well as popular motoring format Top Gear and Idris Elba cop series Luther, there are titles including BBC comedy Citizen Khan.

Iflix to launch operations in Africa in 2017

Internet TV platform Iflix plans to launch in several African countries before the end of the year. The company's spokesperson in South Africa, Jo Eyre said Iflix is focused on the lower end of the streaming market, and aims to launch with mobile network operators as partners, MyBroadband reported. It is talking to several local operators and discussions are going well, said Eyre.
