Retailer Ikea has bumped up its smart home offering by entering into a partnership with speakers maker Sonos. Together, the two parties will study how sound can contribute to life at home. Based on their conclusions, the two companies will develop smart products that integrate a “great sound experience” into home furnishings. Ikea and Sonos said they want to make it possible for more people to create the “right atmosphere” in their home using sound and design.

The first products based on this collaboration will be ready over the course of 2019.

The cooperation between Ikea and Sonos comes under the umbrella of Ikea Home Smart. These smart home systems started with the launch of wireless mobile charging stations in 2015, followed by smart lighting introduced in 2016. The exploration of smart sound systems is the third step for Ikea Home Smart.

With regard to the smart lighting, Ikea said it is developing new products. "The range of smart lighting will certainly be expanded with new products. As previously announced, we will officially start selling new smart colour lighting in October, when a candle lamp will be added to the range. New possibilities will also be introduced over the coming year, such as integrated lighting for PAX cabinets and kitchens, for example,"spokesperson Sabine Kaars Sijpesteijn told Telecompaper in September.
