Iliad passes 8% of Italian SIMs in Q2, WindTre leads with 29%
WindTre continued as Italy’s leading mobile operator at the end of the second quarter of 2020 with a 28.8 percent share of the country's 78.1 million human SIMs, down 2.8 percent year on year, according to the latest quarterly report from regulator Agcom. TIM (Telecom Italia) remained second with 26.8 percent, down 1.0 percent year on year, with Vodafone falling 0.9 percent to 24.4 percent of the market at the end of June. The top three MNOs continued shedding lines at the expense of new entrant Iliad Italia, which reached 8.0 percent at the end of the quarter, up 3.3 percentage points year on year.

MVNO PosteMobile climbed 0.4 percent to reach 5.5 percent of the market, with Italy’s remaining MVNOs accounting for 6.6 percent of the total, up 0.9 percent. Counting M2M lines, TIM continued as market leader with a 29.4 percent share, down 0.9 percent year on year, followed by Vodafone and WindTre, with 28.9 percent and 26.4 percent of the market, the latter down 2.1 percent year on year, Iliad with 6.0 percent and PosteMobile with 4.2 percent.

The mobile market as a whole fell by a total of 900,000 SIMs in the year to end of June, reaching a total of 103.6 million, with a 2.8 million rise in M2M lines partly offsetting a 3.6 million fall in traditional human SIMs.

However, data consumption continued to surge, with over 70 percent of human SIMs carrying data traffic in the second quarter of 2020 and the average data consumed reaching 9.1 GB a month in the second quarter, up 58.0 percent on the year-earlier average of 5.8 GB, said Agcom.
