Italian telecom revenues down 5.3% on Covid impact in first 9 months of 2020

Total revenues in Italy’s telecommunications sector declined by 5.3 percent year on year in the first 9 months 2020 due above all to the negative impact of Covid-19 restrictions on mobility, according to an update from industry regulator Agcom. The decline affected the mobile segment (-6.2%) more than the fixed (-4.5%), with the telecommunications sector as a whole losing some EUR 1.1 billion from January to September period, compared to EUR 780 million for Italy’s media sector.

The report also covered the affect of the pandemic on data consumption, leading to surges on both fixed and mobile networks. Agcom said daily mobile data consumption rose by an average of 56.1 percent to 19.1 petabytes in the year to end of September compared to the same period of 2019, with the average daily traffic on fixed lines climbing 49.5 percent year on year to 104.3 petabytes.

Italian mobile rates down over 4%, data bundles up 24% - study

The prices of Italian mobile plans are continuing a downward trend that begun with the launch of Iliad in 2018, reports website key4biz.it, citing a study of January 2022 offers conducted by price comparison site SosTariffe. The average monthly price of an average mobile plan (MNOs and MVNOs) in January 2022 compared to the year-earlier month is down 4.5 percent to EUR 10.59, while the bundled data has risen 24.2 percent to 70GB from 57GB.

Italian telecom revenues down 10% over 5-year period

Total revenues in Italy's telecommunications sector declined by 10.1 percent from 2016 to 2020, according to a report from industry regulator Agcom. The sector as a whole posted revenues of EUR 31.5 billion in 2016, a figure that fell by a total of EUR 3.2 billion over the subsequent 5 years to reach EUR 28.3 billion in 2021. The decline accelerated last year due above all to the negative impact of Covid-19 restrictions on mobility, added the watchdog.

Italian ADSL lines fall to 30% of fixed network total

Just over three in ten (31%) of Italian fixed internet subscribers used ADSL (copper) networks at the end of the second quarter of 2021, according to the latest update from regulator Agcom. Four years earlier – in June 2017 – just under 80 percent of fixed network accesses were copper, but they have since declined by some 9.9 million lines to 4.68 million due the rise in FTTC, FTTH and FWA technology, which together account for 13.73 million of Italy's 18.40 million fixed broadband lines.

WindTre leads Italian mobile market on 27% in Q1, Iliad close to 10%

WindTre continued as Italy's leading mobile operator at the end of the first quarter of 2020 despite shedding 2.0 percent of its market share in a year, according to the latest quarterly report from regulator Agcom. The Q1 ranking saw WindTre on 27.3 of the market, followed by TIM (Telecom Italia) with 26.3 percent, down 0.5 percent year on year, with Vodafone down 0.9 percent to 23.6 percent of the country's 77.6 million human SIMs.

Italian mobile data consumption up 40% on Covid impact

The latest Covid-19 monitoring report from Italian communications industry regulator Agcom continued to reveal the profound effect of the pandemic on data consumption in the country, with annual surges on both fixed and mobile networks. Agcom said daily mobile data consumption rose by an average of 39.8 percent to 23.2 petabytes in March 2021, the highest ever figure, compared to 16.6 petabytes in March 2020.

Average Italian data consumption continued to surge in the third quarter of 2020, reaching an average of 9.2 GB a month per user, up 48.0 percent on the year-earlier average of 6.2 GB, according to the latest quarterly update from regulator Agcom.
