India adds 6 mln phone subscribers in March

India ended March with 1.194 billion telephone subscribers, up by 6.03 million from February. The total comprises 1.170 billion wireless subscribers, up by 5.98 million in the month, and 24.40 million fixed-line subscribers, slightly up by 54,000 in the month. In March, 6.03 million subscribers submitted requests for mobile number portability, according to figures from the Telecom Regularity Authority of India (Trai).

India’s mobile subscriber base increased by 5.98 percent month-on-month to 1.170 billion at end-March. Private operators held 91.06 percent of the mobile market share (based on subscriber base), while state-owned companies BSNL and MTNL held 8.94 percent market share.

India’s fixed-line subscriber base increased to 24.40 million in March from 24.35 million in the previous month. The net increase in India’s fixed-line subscriber base was 0.05 million at a monthly growth rate of 0.22 percent. BSNL and MTNL held a share of 70.29 percent of the fixed-line market.

The Indian broadband subscriber base increased to 276.52 million at end-March, from 261.31 million a month earlier. Top five ISPs in terms of market share (based on subscriber base) are Reliance Jio Infocom (108.48 million), Bharti Airtel (49.13 million), Vodafone (37.72 million), Idea Cellular (24.70 million), and BSNL (21.67 million).
