Indian court gives operators 3 mths to continue services

India's Supreme Court has ruled that operators whose licences were canceled in its ruling in February can continue services longer, due to the delay in organising an auction of the associated spectrum. Under the earlier ruling, which canceled the mobile licences awarded under the previous government, the mobile companies were ordered to halt services at the start of June. Operators such as Uninor and MTS India had asked the court to allow them to continue services longer. The Supreme Court asked the government to conduct the auction by 31 August, the Economic Times reports, extending its earlier deadline of 02 June by nearly three months. Operators can continue services until 07 September. The government said it aims to redistribute the spectrum by the end of the current fiscal year, in March 2013. Regulator Trai issued its recommendations for the auction on 24 April, and the government will now consider how to go ahead with the plans. The court order has already led some operators, such as STel and Etisalat DB, to cease services on their networks.
