Trai says no need for new exit policy
The Telecom Regulatory of India has said no new 'exit policy' is needed to address the issue of operators unable to continue under their current licences. The government had asked the regulator to consider the issue following the Supreme Court ruling canceling over 100 licences due to an inappropriate awards procedure under the previous administration. The resulting legal uncertainty, pending the re-auction of the associated spectrum, led to the exit of several mobile operators on the Indian market. Following a public consultation on the issue, Trai said that operator cans surrender their licences under the existing terms of the permits, by giving 60 days notice (30 days for ISPs). The entry fee for the licences remains non-refundable.
